Error checking for updates with SOCKS5 proxy configured

I'm using EPF 3.46.1.0 under Windows 10 Pro x64 1909. I can check for updates without issue if "Use proxy server" is disabled. However, if I enable this setting and use my VPN provider's SOCKS5 proxy, I get the following error when checking for updates:
Importantly, projects work fine with the SOCKS5 proxy enabled. Only the "Check for updates" function is affected. I also use the same SOCKS5 proxy with Chrome, with no issues.
My VPN provider's SOCKS5 proxy is 10.8.0.1 (a private IP address, obviously) and does not require authentication, since it only accepts connections from inside the VPN.
